Dental Crowns
Today much emphasis is placed on having a healthy smile. But if you have one or more teeth that are cracked, chipped, decayed, or otherwise degraded, how can you best restore your smile to its former glory? Crowns—also known as tooth caps—are a popular dental restoration option that can be adapted to fit practically any budget restraints or tooth status.
A crown is a dental cap that covers a damaged tooth, restoring not just its appearance but also improving strength and functionality. They can be formed to be indistinguishable from any other tooth and can even improve one’s quality of life and self-confidence. Cemented permanently in place, a crown can then be cared for and maintained as easily as a regular tooth.
Crowns are offered in a wide variety of materials:
- Metal – Metal crowns can be anything from stainless steel to gold to silver and beyond. These crowns are much more visually obvious; however, they are some of the strongest allowing for long-term functionality.
- Porcelain – Porcelain is a popular choice for those wanting caps that blend in with their current teeth. The porcelain is fused to an underlying metal cap for greater durability. However, the porcelain can chip at times and wear down along the gum line to reveal the metal base.
- Ceramic – Ceramic is another option for those wanting a dental cap that closely matches their natural tooth color. Like porcelain, it can be fused to metal, or can be made into an all-ceramic cap. These are not as strong, though, which is why they’re more often employed for front teeth.
- Resin – One of the cheapest crown options, resin can provide a natural tooth appearance, but is also weaker than most other materials and prone to cracking or chipping.
Crowns are a great option as they can bring about both health and emotional benefits in the long run. Health-wise they restore your teeth, fill in gaps, and prevent further decay. Emotionally, crowns can offer a big boost to self-confidence as you no longer have to worry about what others might think about the discolored or decayed teeth your smile exposes.

A few words from our patients:
Dr. Dan is the best dentist ever. Most recently I was treated for a gum abscess which led to a root canal on a tooth with a crown and two courses of antibiotics. One week later the abscess is gone, and my tooth is no longer sensitive to hot or cold, crunch or chew, or touch. It feels great, looks great and I could not have asked for a better result. Dr. Dan, you and Leonardo Da Vinci do some great work–masterpieces!!! And you are both in the smile making business…Me and Mona smiling together. Thank you.
